Punit Boolchand is an experimentalist by inclination and has interests in structure and vibrational excitations of electronic and photonic materials. Some of the materials of recent interest include ferroelectrics, high-T superconductors, oxide and chalcogenide glasses, and solid electrolytes. In network glasses and thin films, we examine nano- and micro-scale phase separation effects. Such effects are elucidated by spectroscopic (Raman scattering, IR reflectance, Neutron scattering, Mossbauer effect), and thermal analysis methods ( Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Dynamical Mechanical Analysis). Lagrangian constraint counting algorithms are developed to understand glass forming tendency, elastic and thermal thresholds. Recent work has included the discovery of intermediate ( self-organized) phases in disordered systems, which has led to a generic structure based classification of glasses in terms of their elastic behavior: floppy-intermediate-stressed rigid. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He has published about 200 papers, and edited 2 books. He has held visiting positions at Stanford, Leuven, Hyderabad, and Paris.
