GSGA Student Awards - FAQs

This page lists the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the GSGA Student Awards. The FAQs are categorized by topic and are updated regularly. The Graduate Student Governance Association (GSGA) provides up to $400 per year for all UC graduate students as part of their student awards. The three student awards that can be availed by the graduate students of UC from the GSGA are:

Conference Travel Award (CTA) - FULL:

To be eligible for this award, a student must satisfy the following requirements:

Must be a degree seeking graduate student with at least 12 credit hours earned.
Must be registered for at least one credit hour every quarter (except Summer).
Must be a member of a properly registered and active GSA group*.
Must be presenting original research in the form of papers/posters or chairing a panel/session at a conference. Check with GSGA, before the conference, if you are not sure about your compliance with this requirement.

* The CS GSA is an active GSA group and hence, satisfies this requirement.

Applying for this award is a two-step process described in detail in the GSGA website here. Note that the first step has to be done BEFORE the actual conference travel. The application form for the second step is also available here.

Conference Travel Award (CTA) - Partial ($100):

This $100 award is for students who wish to attend a conference but are not presenting their research in any format. A student must satisfy all the following criteria to be eligible for this award:

Must be a degree seeking graduate student with at least 12 credit hours earned.
Must be registered for at least one credit hour every quarter (except Summer).
Must be a member of a properly registered and active GSA group*.
Must obtain a letter of support for the travel from the student's department chair or research advisor.

* The CS GSA is an active GSA group and hence, satisfies this requirement.

Applying for this award is a simple process described in detail here . Unlike Full CTA, there is no need to submit a request for funding beforehand for this award. However, the student has to apply for this award within 14 calendar days of the end of the conference. The application form for the second step is also available here.

One-Time Research Award (RA):

This award is designed to help students obtain funds for helping/furthering their research. Students can use this money to buy consumables or research materials - things that are not available for free to the student from the university or to fund travel for research activity. This money cannot be used for traveling to conferences.

A student must satisfy all the following criteria to be eligible for the RA.

Must be a degree seeking graduate student with at least 12 credit hours earned.
Must be registered for at least one credit hour every quarter (except Summer).
Must be a member of a properly registered and active GSA group*.
Must not have exhausted $400 in RA monies already.

* The CS GSA is an active GSA group and hence, satisfies this requirement.

Applying for and receiving the RA is a two step process described in detail here . A student can apply for a RA, for up to $400, only once during his/her graduate schooling at UC. The application form is also available here .
