FROM: The 2008-2009 University of Cincinnati Barbour and Cohen Awards Committee
The nomination process has begun for the 2009 A.B. [Dolly] Cohen awards for excellence in teaching and the George B. Barbour award for furthering good student-faculty relations. The President's faculty awards committee has a website ( www.uc.edu/facultyawards/awards.htm ), which provides all the necessary guidelines
Nominations for these awards must originate with students and/or alumni. We therefore urge you to share this information with those groups.
To this end, feel free to post this letter and the Guidelines for the awards on your College Web Site. The nomination letter itself should not be any longer than one page. The dossier required later should contain full documentation of the nomination. Only nominations sent via the United States or University postal system, or via email will be processed.
Nominations sent via fax or voice mail will not be accepted. Nominations must be in by Monday, December 1, 2008.

If the awards are to be given to the most worthy candidates, it is necessary that the achievements of the nominees be well documented. That is a task that departments must undertake. Departments with nominees will receive a communication providing the procedures and guidelines for the awards.
The winners will be recognized at the Faculty Awards Celebration Ceremony on Thursday, May 21, 2009, and will receive a plaque and a check for $2000.

Recently, my office announced the University Research Council (URC) Summer Graduate Student Research Fellowship competition (for more information go to: http://www.uc.edu/ucResearch/funding_opportunities.html ).
We will be providing two grant writing workshops for all interested graduate students. These workshops will be presented by the chairs of the URC subcommittees and the same information will be presented in both. These will be informational sessions for students who plan to submit applications for this URC program. Each session will consist of a brief presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The Monday session will be videotaped and made available on the URC website ( http://www.uc.edu/ucResearch/funding_opportunities.html ) for those interested students who cannot attend either session.

Two websites that might be of interest.
Engineering library is offering workshops on RefWorks and LaTeX on 11/03/08 at 3PM and 11/05/08 at 2PM respetively. The workshops will be held at 850D Baldwin classroom inside the Engineering Library.
LaTeX -- LaTeX is an open source document preparation system widely used in Engineering, Mathematics, natural sciences and other disciplines. Using LaTeX, you can write articles and reports faster and easier than by using word processors such as MS Word especially when using mathematical symbols, equations and when generating bibliographies. This workshop is aimed at getting familiar with the bare bones and features of LaTeX and will include a brief introduction to tools such as BiBTeX.
RefWorks for Engineers -- Learn how to use a personal information managament and bibliography creator to create and manage citations retrieved while conducting your literature reviews.

Hi everyone,
On November 10-11 the College of Applied Science (CAS) is hosting a conference celebrating the 50th anniversary of computing on the UC campus. There will be many featured speakers about computing past, present, and future throughout the weekend and it should be very interesting. The best part is, it's going to be FREE for YOU!
The CS department has funds for a group of students to attend this conference and has asked ACM to collect names of interested students. If you are interested in attending, please send me an email ( acm.at.uc@gmail.com ) and I will get you on the list.
