- Explore learning in virtual worlds with Second Life - 10/22/08

Dear Graduate Students,

If you could capture your students' attention by immersing them in your course content—let them wander Thoreau's Walden Pond , live in a nineteenth-century American frontier community, build a superstructure, or conduct a science experiment—without ever leaving your classroom, office or home, wouldn't you do it?

In Second Life for Educators:  Enter a Virtual World , this is exactly what you can do!  Second Life is an exciting new venue for experiential learning, distance learning, and collaboration.  On Wednesday, October 22, from 10:00AM - 11:30AM, in 462 Langsam, Chris Collins will be your tour guide as you explore virtual worlds outside your classroom. She will show you how you can transport your students into virtual worlds where they can engage in learning experiences and visit places that would otherwise be impossible.

- Colloquium on Quantum Computing - 10/17/08

Talk by: Prof. Subhash Kak, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater
Time & Date & Place: 4-5PM, Oct. 17th, 2008 427 ERC

Abstract: Some quantum computing algorithms can be orders of
magnitude faster than the fastest classical algorithms. The talk will
take a look at quantum computing to see what we can expect from it in the near future. The prospects for building efficient quantum gates and implementation of quantum algorithms will be examined.

Biography: Subhash Kak is professor and head of Computer Science Department at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. His research has spanned the fields of information theory , cryptography, neural networks , quantum information , and history of science . He developed the theory of d-sequences for applications to computing and cryptography and he has worked on a variety of problems on data and network security. He is the inventor of a family of instantaneously trained neural networks (also patented), which could be a model for short-term memory, for which a variety of artificial intelligence applications have been found. He was the first to look for an information metric in a quantum state over thirty years ago. His work on quantum information includes the only all-quantum protocol for public-key cryptography. He has found bounds on the capabilities of quantum computers and recently proposed a new measure of information for quantum systems.

- Research Talks, CS Dept. - 10/03/08, 10/17/08

The following two research Talks have been scheduled as part of CS research colloquia for this quarter. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the talks you have interest in.

  1. Title: Post-Quantum Cryptography - Multivariable Public Key Cryptosystems by Prof. Jintai Ding of Maths Department, UC
    Date: Oct 3rd, 2008
    Time & Place: 427 ERC from 4PM - 5PM
Abstract: Public key cryptography is an indispensable part of our modern communication systems. However, quantum computers can defeat cryptosystems like RSA, which are based on “hard” number theory problems. Recently a great effort has been put into the search for alternative public key cryptosystems. The family of multivariable public key cryptosystems (MKPC) is one such promising alternative. Their theoretical security assumption is the proven theorem that solving a system of polynomial equations over a finite field is in general NP-hard and quantum computers are not yet shown to be effective in solving this problem. Furthermore, computations in a finite field can be more efficient than manipulating larger and larger numbers, as required by the systems based on number theoretical problems. In this talk, we will present the development in this area, mainly we will talk about the designs and the attacks of those cryptosystems and related topics.
  2. Title: Is Quantum the Holy Grail of Computing? by Prof. Subhash Kak, Oklahoma State University
    Date: Oct 17th, 2008
    Time & Place: Baldwin 645 from 4PM - 5PM
Abstract: Some quantum computing algorithms can be orders of magnitude faster than the fastest classical algorithms. The talk will take a look at quantum computing to see what we can expect from it in the near future. The prospects for building efficient quantum gates and implementation of quantum algorithms will be examined.

- Nominate Your Research Advisor Now! - ASAP

Attention postdocs and graduate students of the University of Cincinnati:

Have you received outstanding scientific training from your research mentor/advisor?

Would you give an enthusiastic recommendation to an incoming postdoc/graduate student to join your lab due to your advisor's ability to both suggest innovative research, and train you to do it successfully and ethically?

This is your chance to tell your advisor how much their training has helped you. Please nominate him/her to speak on our upcoming faculty panel concerning the state of postdoctoral/graduate training at the University of Cincinnati.  This seminar will involve a brief introduction to some of the important issues facing today's postdocs and graduate students, followed by a faculty panel discussion on the best practices for handling these issues.  We really need your help to identify these highly qualified research advisors - so if you feel that the training you are receiving at the University of Cincinnati has been outstanding, please let us know which research advisor is providing it for you!

Thank you!
