1. "Introduction to LaTeX": Engineering Library Workshop - 1/31/2008

Engineering Library is offering a workshop on LaTeX on Thursday, Jan 31, 2008 in the Engineering Library classroom 850D Baldwin from 2:00 - 3:00PM .

LaTeX is an open source document preparation system widely used in Engineering, Mathematics, natural sciences and other disciplines. Using LaTeX, you can write articles and reports faster and easier than by using word processors such as MS Word especially when using mathematical symbols, equations and when generating bibliographies. This workshop is aimed at getting familiar with the bare bones and features of LaTeX and will include a brief introduction to tools such as BiBTeX

For more information on other workshops offered by the Engineering Library this quarter, see here.

2. EndNote: Information Management and Bibliography Creation Workshop - 1/31/08

University Libraries is offering a workshop on EndNote - a bibliographic management tool, on Thursday, Jan 31, 2008 from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM, at Langsam 461.

EndNote will help you collect and manage your bibliographic and full text resources, and it will significantly facilitate the onerous task of creating in-text citations and bibliographies. This workshop provides hands-on training covering the following EndNote functions: electronic collection of research references, organization and management of references in your personal EndNote database, creation of links to full text resources and the use of the Cite-While-You-Write feature to automatically format in-text citations and bibiliographies. University Libraries provides EndNote for training use. A personal copy of EndNote may be purchased from the UC Bookstore.

For more information on other workshops offered by the University Libraries this quarter, see here.

3. 2008 Graduate Poster Forum - Register ASAP

The Graduate Student Poster Forum is an ideal opportunity to showcase your research and also to find out the work done by other students at UC. The CS GSA strongly encourages all the students to participate in this event. More information will soon be updated in the CS GSA website.

The Graduate School has opened its online registration for the 2008 Graduate Poster Forum to be held on March 7, 2008 at TUC 400 & Surrounding Rooms and Hallways. The Poster Forum is partnering with UC Showcase 2008 to make this year an even broader and more comprehensive display of the research done by the faculty and students.

Please contact Jacque.Daugherty@uc.edu, if you have questions or want more information.

4. GSGA Travel Awards Update

Information from Divyachapan(DC) Padur, GSGA - Treasurer:

The UC Accounting department has formulated newer, stricter guidelines which directly affects the way GSGA disburses monies for travel and research. In accordance with the new guidelines, the GSGA award process and rules have been updated. These changes go into effect Feb 1, 2008. To allow a smooth transition, we are starting to implement these rules right away. The GSGA website, www.uc.edu/gsga , has been updated with the necessary changes. All graudate students who have applied / will be applying for funding from GSGA from this day forth are requested to peruse the new rules. Here are some key changes that will be implemented :

1. Travel Expense Reports (TER) will not be honored by UC Accounts 30 days after end of travel. This includes the GSGA 14 day deadline and all students will be subjected to GSGA deadlines first.
2. Only one TER per trip. Multiple sources of funding must be included in the same TER.
3. Original, itemized(whenever applicable) receipts required. Credit/debit card statements alone cannot be used as receipts. No Receipts No Money Policy.
4. Unofficial sharing of costs by students is strongly discouraged. Every traveler must have his/her name on a receipt to get reimbursed.
5. Mandatory Travel Pre-Authorization from GSGA.
6. No online request submission required for any kind of award.

Please see the GSGA website for the detailed rules. All graduate students are requested to be a little extra cautious and expeditious in their submissions. We will work with every graduate student to make sure they receive the eligible funding in a timely manner.

The CS-GSA committee members meet twice every month to discuss relevant issues, progresses made, and to plan future activities. All students, faculty and staff of the department are more than welcome to attend these meetings to voice their opinions, suggestions and concerns.

Cannot make to these meetings? Email to csgsa@ececs.uc.edu or visit our website for more information.
