The agenda and the activities of this CS GSA committee are listed below.
Activities and Events:
- Sponsored the "Exam week coffee break" for the students of ECE & CS Depts. in Fall, Winter quarters of 2007-08, in collaboration with the ECE GSA.
- Worked with the Department to obtain the DQE question papers of previous years. Details here.
- Series of workshops on SUN Technologies given by Yue Chao, the SUN Ambassador @ UC. Details here.
- Organized a Electronic Theses Dissertation (ETD) workshop presented by the ETD helpdesk on 02/27/2008. Details here.
- Organized a farewell reception for Prof. Paul on behalf of all graduate students of the CS & ECE Depts, on 1/10/2008. Details here.
- Organized an "End of Exams - Movie Night" event on 12/07/2007 with free food, pop and a screening of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End". Details here.
- Created a CS GSA blog which is intended to serve as a forum for the students to voice their opinions and concerns.
- Created a new CS GSA website with a lot of useful information and resources such as FAQs and Help with GSGA travel awards, latest news and announcements, etc.
- Started the CS GSA e-Newsletters to send notices and regular upadtes to the students.
Agenda:
We aim to continue the good work done by the previous ECECS GSA committee (2006-07) and intend to be an active body for the welfare of graduate students in the department.Some items on our agenda include:
- GSGA representation and Travel Funds:
- Represent the CS department in the Student Governance Association (GSGA). Facilitate reimbursement of travel funds for graduate student conference travel.
- CS Graduate Poster Competition:
- Provide a forum to the graduate students to display their research work and ideas. Graduate students advanced in their research get an opportunity to display their fine work. Graduate students beginning their research get an excellent platform to obtain expert feedback on their ideas and review work in other areas.
- Plenary talks by distinguished Professors:
- Frequent plenary talks by distinguished Professors in different research avenues for the awareness and creating interests in multitude of research fields.
- Additional Fund Drives:
- Organize technical workshops: attracting members from the local industries and colleges of similar interets to participate for a nominal fee. Money collected in this way will bolster the GSA budget.
- Exam week Coffee Break:
- We intend to continue the tradition of providing coffee and other beverages to students during exam week.
- Graduate Mixers and Other "fun" activities:
- We will be organizing events such as graduate mixers and movie nights with the sole intention of having "fun" to reduce the stress among graduate students and also to improve the interaction among students.
- Providing information and resources:
- We will be informing about the several resources available at UC that aren't always known to and used by the students - such as workshops, seminars, and other events.
- Improve interaction, get feedback from students and act on them:
- We intend to encourage student participation and to have a forum where students will be able to voice their opinions or concerns.
