Homework Assignment 1: Working in teams of 1,2, or 3, you are to write a report on the state of the Internet as of April 2001. You are to use experimental tools to help you develop a picture of internet connectivity. For your experiments you are to use UNIX/traceroute, WINTEL/tracert, tools from and data available from Internet Weather Report, tracert.com, neotrace.com, visualroute.com. You should answer the following questions.

1) What is the IP connectivity to your hometown(s) from UC? Describe the IP path, and estimate the roundtrip latency and the bandwidth.
2) What is the IP connectivity to several large websites such as Yahoo!, Google, CNN, eBay, etc. Describe the IP paths, and estimate the roundtrip latency and the bandwidth. Are multiple servers involved?
3) Find several Internet congestion chokepoints or bottlenecks. Try to do this at several levels of geographic granularity, i.e., local, regional, national, and international. Can you find chokepoints on Internet2?
4) Find asymmetric and anomalous IP paths, i.e., paths that are circuitous and not logical from a geographic perspective.
